The mother of three and killer of nine newborn babies did not show the slightest emotion when receiving the verdict: 15 years on eight counts of second degree murder.

Neither did she show any emotion throughout the trial. Nor did she try to explain - on advice of her attorney she did not talk for 10 trial days. More than 80 witnesses could not explain either why or how Sabine HILSCHENZ killed her newborns. During the first interrogations after her arrest, she blamed it on alcohol, that she did not remember the births.

Prosecution is convinced, that she killed her babies between 1992 and 1998 immediately after each birth by negligence and will appeal against the verdict. Prosecution wants to have her imprisoned for life on eight counts of murder first degree. The nineth case was in lapse before the trial started. Defense attorneys will appeal too.

The case shocked Germany.

Sabine HILSCHENZ got her first baby with 18, with 21 she was a mother of three. According to witnesses, she was a loving mother for her three surviving children.

Her husband refused to have more children. When she delivered her fourth baby in the toilet of their appartment, it probably drowned. Her husband allegedly did not notice anything, nor did he notice eight more pregnancies and secret births. Thatīs what he says.

Sabine HILSCHENZ buried the little corpses in plant pots on her balcony and grew strawberries and flowers in it. When she moved to her parentīs house in Brieskow-Finkenheerd, she took the little angels with her, where they have been discovered by a neighbour July 2005 - 17 years after the first murder...

Police in Germany have discovered the bones of nine newborn babies buried in flower pots and buckets, and arrested a mother of four (currently pregnant) believed to be their mother on suspicion of killing them, authorities said on Monday.

The remains, buried in sand and earth at a site in the eastern state of Brandenburg, were recovered on Sunday after a witness who had been clearing a garage there found human bones stored in a fish tank, a police spokesman said.

"We are assuming there are at least nine corpses," said Michael Neff of the Frankfurt an der Oder state prosecutor's office. He did not comment on a possible motive.

Police arrested a 39-year-old woman on suspicion of killing the babies immediately after they were born between 1988 and 2004.

The woman has said she was the mother of the babies but has not admitted killing them, a court spokesman in Frankfurt an der Oder said. He said her statement was confused.

Local politicians reacted with shock to the discovery and asked how it was possible that the disappearance of the babies over a period of some 16 years had not come to light earlier.

"We are looking at a crime on a scale that, as far as I can remember, has never been seen in the history of the Federal Republic," the Interior Minister of the state of Brandenburg, Joerg Schoenbohm, said in a statement.

"We have to ask ourselves how this incredible crime remained hidden over all these years. It's a question directed at relatives, neighbours, doctors and the authorities," he said.

The woman had stored personal belongings at the site in the town of Brieskow-Finkenheerd, some 80 kilometres (50 miles) southeast of Berlin near the Polish border.

Around 40 police officers with sniffer dogs searched the site on Monday, looking for further remains.
