2006_05_31: Serial killer commits suicide in prison	Ljubljana
The most notorious serial killer in the former Yugoslavia committed suicide in his cell on Tuesday, prison authorities said. Metod Trobec, a Slovene whose rape and murder of five women in 1978 and the burning of their remains in his home baker's oven shocked the ex-Yugoslav federation at the time, hanged himself with a blanket in a prison in Dob pri Mirni, southeastern Slovenia. Trobec was the last defendant sentenced to death in Yugoslavia, which disintegrated in the 1990's into several nations that later abolished capital punishment. The Slovene Supreme Court later upheld Trobec's appeal and reduced his sentence to 20 years in prison, but he was sentenced to serve another 15 years for the attempted murder of an inmate.
