A 40-year-old nurse, once employed at the pediatric ward of New York Hospital, Green was indicted on March 3, 1986, for killing two of her own children and attempting to kill a third. Her first child had been reported dead on arrival at New York Hospital, with death ascribed to aortic malfunction, while number two had survived the trip from home, dying of unknown causes shortly after arrival in the emergency ward. When Green gave birth to her third child, in August 1985, doctors kept the infant in hospital for two weeks, as a precaution, but their efforts were in vain. Within 24 hours of going home, the baby "stopped breathing" and was rushed back for emergency resuscitation. In the wake of Green's indictment, her newborn was placed in a foster home for safe keeping. Police announced that they were checking some 438 pediatric deaths at New York Hospital, spanning the fifteen years of Green"; employment , but thus far no other charges have been filed.
