James Dwight CANADY, a city water department employee from Seattle, abducted, raped and strangled two women, then dumped their bodies near Stevens Pass. Canady later attacked two other women and was being held in King County Jail on rape, assault and kidnapping charges when he confessed to the murders, leading detectives to one body.Status: In prison in Washington.

A native of Brooklyn, Frank Canonico was arrested by police in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, in early July 1981, charged with the murders of two local women. Homicide investigators said Canonico had signed confessions in the shooting deaths of Willine Wall, age 60, and Phyllis Schwartz, age 43, of nearby Lauderhill. [ReadOn]

For more than a decade, Juan Martin Cantu lived with his wife in a ramshackle house near the Gulf Coast of Texas and worked odd jobs. On the side this model neighbor had a life as a hit man. The truth came out after Cantu was arrested on a charge of felony marijuana possession. [ReadOn]

Known to authorities as "The Lady Killer", this suave Argentinian was arrested on March 9, 1994 after a 20-year murderous rampage. His first victim was a young woman in New York who he strangled and stabbed in the early seventies. By all rights, Harvey Carignan should never have become a serial killer. Sentenced in Alaska to be hanged for murdering a woman during 1949, the hulking killer might have been eliminated early on had not the system intervened. An over-zealous sheriff had elicited confessions from the suspect with assurances that Carignan would not be executed, a condition that appeals courts found disturbing. [ReadOn]

An alcoholic Glasgow brawler with a decade of arrests behind him, Carraher was charged with murder on August 13, 1934, after fatally stabbing James Shaw, a young soldier, in the course of a saloon altercation. Susan & James CARSON were 30-year old hippies from San Francisco who operated a large pot farm in Humbolt County, California. Alaska-born, in 1957, Carter was working as a freelance television cameraman in Anchorage when he decided to try his luck in California, in the spring of 1984. Along the way, his quest for new beginnings would become a dead-end nightmare, as he ran amok and claimed at least five lives. [ReadOn]

An ex-con with a taste for older women, Cassimiro confessed to raping and killing four women in Juiz de Fora in the state of Minas Gerais, Brazil. The five dead women were between 58 and 77 years old and lived alone. All victims were tortured, strangled with electrical chords and some were raped. [ReadOn]

Adopted as an infant, during 1944, by Glenn and Martha Catlin, of Kern County, California, Steven moved to Bakersfield with his new parents in the early 1950s. Dropping out of high school, he showed no interest in honest work and was arrested on forgery charges at age nineteen, serving nine months in a California Youth Authority camp. [ReadOn]

At 6 a.m. on August 4, 1941, Evelyn Anderson, age 26, left her home in the Bronx, walking to her job as a waitress in a nearby restaurant. She never punched the clock that day, and it was 9 p.m. before her lifeless body was discovered in an alley off Jerome Avenue. She had been strangled by a powerful assailant, marks of fingernails imbedded in her throat, but she had not been sexually abused. [ReadOn]

A self-styled "death merchant" who enjoyed killing for pleasure, Chadd has confessed to three murders and various rapes in at least two states. In 1974, according to his own statement, the 20-year-old drifter invaded the home of a San Diego woman, choked and raped his victim , then slashed her throat and continued the sexual assault as she lay dying. A French commando-trained army veteran and fitness fanatic suspected of being a sadistic serial killer may never face trial because interminable delays in the case. Investigators believe that 52-year-old Pierre Chanal -- described by comrades as "an archetypal warrior and man of steel" -- murdered eight young men in the 1980s. The eight victims vanished in or near an area in the Marne region, north-east of Paris, known as the "triangle of death". [ReadOn]

A child of New York City, born in 1955, Rutrell was 15 years old when he joined accomplice L.L. Thompson, 20, in a five-week murder tour of Dixie. Driven by racism and a thirst for "adventure," the black gunmen shot and wounded three white college students in Durham, North Carolina, on April 15, 1970, rolling on from there to murder another Caucasian, J.J. Richard Trenton CHASE became known as the Vampire Killer of Sacramento after a four day blood binge in January, 1978, in which he claimed six lives. Previously he had tried to inject rabbit's blood into his veins and had been institutionalized for exhibiting such strange behavior that merited the nickname "Dracula" within the hospital staff. On June 22, 1999, Juan Chavez, 35, was handed five consecutive life sentences for killing five gay men between 1986 and 1989.Strangely Chavez said he killed the men in an attempt to stop the spread of AIDS. The crusading killer agreed to the life sentence under a plea bargain that saved him from the death penalty. [ReadOn]

Initially billed as the murders of six black "businessmen," Chicago's unsolved homicides of 1971 and '72 had several things in common: all the victims were black males; each was shot in the back of the head, execution style; and all were discarded, like refuse, in the muddy South Branch of the Chicago River. On November, 1, 1994, the Chijon Family, a South Korean gang of cannibals, was sentenced to death for murdering five people. The gang was founded in 1993 by Kim Ki-hwan, a former convict, and six other former prisoners and unemployed workers who shared his grudge against the rich. [ReadOn]

On March 29, 1986, police in Xidan, China -- a district of Peking -- arrested a 42-year-old restaurant owner on charges of murdering three teenagers, cooking their flesh, and serving it to other members of his own family as "pork."
